OUTSTANDING SUCCESS!
see below!!!
This Site has been established by local residents of North and West Melbourne to draw attention to a major threat to this area. We are not against Development or Developers. We accept the need for higher density living near the city. What we don't accept is inappropriate, ad hoc, development. Read the following, do your homework, and if you agree this is YOUR call to action! EMAIL US

GLORIOUS WEST MELBOURNE!

A wonderful mix of old industrial buildings, warehouse conversions, Victorian terraces, residential and business use, on the edge of the city of Melbourne.

To ensure appropriate development of the area, the City of Melbourne adopted the West Melbourne Structure Plan in 2005. You read the background here. In its considered 27 pages it lays out appropriate guidelines for defined precincts. You mightn't agree with everything, but you probably will agree that this is how Town Planning should happen, a wholistic view understanding the need for higher density, while preserving a strong sense of community, heritage and some local character.

For most of the area south and west of the Zagame site marked in red above a height limit of 14m is set. 4 stories.

THE ZAGAME PROJECT

But now that is under challenge with the ZAGAME PROJECT, a development application to build a residential tower on the Zagame car dealership site in King Street (the
red block above, spanning from Roden to Stanley Streets).

The developer has applied for a permit for a VERY LARGE BUILDING in an area of 1 and 2 storey commercial. An area that the Design and Development Overlay 29 and the West Melbourne Structure Plan specifies to have a maximum of 4 storeys!
A massive 10 storey (plus roof plant), 259 unit apartment block of over 25,000 square metres on a 5,500 square metre site, with frontages to Roden, King and Stanley Streets. The current luxury car dealership replaced with multi level town houses, a coffee shop, and this vast boomerang shaped mass.

All this in close proximity to historic low rise terrace housing, in an area with a planned 14 metre (4 storey) height limit!

If this development succeeds, a precedent will be set for 10 storeys in a 4 storey area, and more and more residents will be affected. Visual bulk, shadowing, traffic, car parking, transport.... Even if the development is not near you, take an interest because next time....
EVEN THE POLITICIANS AGREE THIS IS WRONG.

We've had meetings with local members or candidates of all parties, Labor, Liberal, Greens. All agree with what we are saying. Our local member Bronwyn Pike has strongly expressed her views by letter to the Planning Minister, our Liberal Upper House member, Matthew Guy (Shadow Planning Minister) has met us on site and agrees. Brian Walters, the Greens candidate has also written supporting our position to the CCSAC. You can read the letters here.

All tell us to keep fighting, and never give up! We hope you will join us.

Our Group is concerned that after the election we may lose traction on the outcome of this decision.
